Photoperiodic Flowering Response of Biloxi Soybean in 72-Hour Cycles.

چکیده
Recently, evidence has accunmulated to indicate that the photoperiodic control -of floral induction is mediated by an endogenous rhythm with periods of approximately 24 hours (9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22). It has long been known that the floral response of Biloxi soybean varies with the length of the photoperiod (4, 5, 6, 7, 18). The optimum response with 24-hour treatment cycles is obtained with photoperiods between 6 and 10 hours and normally no flowering is produced with photoperiods longer than 14 or perhaps 141⁄22 hours (1, 28). Hamner (18), however, has shown that if a dark period of 16 hours is given in each cycle after photoperiods of different lengths, flowering is obtained with photoperiods as long as 16 and 18 hours. In those experiments, however, the cycle duration was varied with the different lengths of photoperiods given. Since Nanda and Hamner (23) have demonstrated a periodic variation in floral response as a function of cycle durations, it was difficult to predict what results might be obtained with various photoperiods given in long cycles of standard duration. In the following experiments a 72-hour, or tridiurnal, cycle was used to further assess the effects of light breaks and differential photoperiod durations on photoperiodic and rhythmic flowering responses.

Floral Inhibition of Biloxi Soybean During a 72-hour Cycle.
The inhibitory effect of light interruptions given during the photophobe phases of a 72-hour cycle was studied with Biloxi soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]. The basic 72-hour cycle consisted of 8 hours of light followed by 64 hours of darkness and was repeated 7 times. Supplementary white light treatments given at the twenty-fourth and/or forty-eighth hour of the cycle (photophil phases) promot...
متن کاملRhythmic leaf movements in biloxi soybean and their relation to flowering.
The rhythmic leaf movement of Biloxi soybean (Glycine max) and its relationship to the rhythmic flowering response were studied. The movements of fully expanded trifoliate leaves were recorded with kymographs and time lapse photography in growth chambers. A comparison between the leaf movement rhythm and the rhythmic flowering response indicates that a high degree of similarity exists between t...

Bunning suggested that circadian rhythms provide the basis for time measurement in the photoperiodic responses of plants (2). A classic example is found in Glycine max. L. Merr. (Biloxi soybean), whose flowering response occurs in a rhythmical form having peaks of flowering that were approximately 24 hr apart (6). Recentlv Moore et al. (5) reported that Xanthiuim pensylvanicum did not exhibit a...
متن کاملFunctional and Evolutionary Characterization of the CONSTANS Gene Family in Short-Day Photoperiodic Flowering in Soybean
CONSTANS (CO) plays a central role in photoperiodic flowering control of plants. However, much remains unknown about the function of the CO gene family in soybean and the molecular mechanisms underlying short-day photoperiodic flowering of soybean. We identified 26 CO homologs (GmCOLs) in the soybean genome, many of them previously unreported. Phylogenic analysis classified GmCOLs into three cl...
متن کاملAssociation of the circadian rhythmic expression of GmCRY1a with a latitudinal cline in photoperiodic flowering of soybean.
Photoperiodic control of flowering time is believed to affect latitudinal distribution of plants. The blue light receptor CRY2 regulates photoperiodic flowering in the experimental model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. However, it is unclear whether genetic variations affecting cryptochrome activity or expression is broadly associated with latitudinal distribution of plants. We report here an inves...
